What Is Deep Drawing? A Practical Guide for Hardware Component Buyers

2026-09-26 0

Deep drawing is a metal forming process in which a flat blank is radially drawn into a forming die, producing a seamless hollow part. It is widely used for cups, shells, housings and other components where strength, surface finish and material utilisation all matter.

How the process works

A blank holder presses the sheet against the die while a punch pushes the material into the cavity. The material flows rather than stretches, so wall thickness is controlled by the draw ratio and by the number of drawing stages.

  • Single-action drawing: one stage, suitable for shallow parts
  • Double-action drawing: blank holding and drawing are separated for better control
  • Multi-stage drawing: used for deep or complex geometries

Design details that matter

Corner radii, draw depth relative to diameter, material grade and lubrication all influence whether a part can be produced in one stage or several. Involving a manufacturing partner early avoids expensive iterations after tooling is cut.

Pengfeng Precision offers deep drawing alongside sheet metal, stamping and CNC machining, so a single partner can take a component from prototype to mass production.
