How to Choose the Right Sheet Metal Fabrication Process for Your Project

2026-10-03 0

Choosing the right manufacturing process early has a bigger impact on cost and lead time than almost any later decision. Most hardware components can be produced in more than one way, and the optimum depends on volume, geometry, tolerance and material.

A simple decision framework

Sheet metal fabrication is usually the best fit for enclosures, chassis, brackets and panels when annual volumes are moderate and design changes are still expected. Laser cutting, punching and bending keep tooling investment low.

Stamping becomes attractive once annual volumes are high enough to amortise a dedicated die. Progressive dies deliver very low unit cost and excellent repeatability, which is why terminals, connectors and small structural parts are typically stamped.

Deep drawing is the process of choice for hollow, seamless parts such as cups, shells and housings. It produces parts with good material utilisation and attractive surface finish.

CNC machining covers tight tolerances, complex 3D geometry and prototypes where tooling would not pay back. It is also the natural companion to the processes above for secondary operations.

What we recommend

Send us your drawings, target annual volume and tolerance requirements. Our engineers will compare the candidate processes, highlight the trade-offs and propose the option that best balances cost, quality and lead time.
